What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are the aromatic and flavorful component of plant essential oils. A well-known Cannabis terpene is a limonene. Limonene is used to promote weight loss, prevent cancer, treat cancer, and treat bronchitis. In foods, beverages, and chewing gum, limonene is used as a flavoring. 9 Not only is this found in varieties of hemp, but it is also found in citrus peels!

Terpenes (and terpenoids) are aromatic organic compounds found in many plants and even some insects. Plants developed terpenes to ward off herbivores that might eat them and to attract helpful predators and pollinators. Cannabis (Hemp) has naturally high levels of terpenes. Nearly all of the major terpenes in cannabis are analgesic (anti-pain), anti-bacterial, anti-viral, or anti-inflammatory. 6 Maple syrup, for example, contains at least 300 distinct terpenes. This is why syrup made without the full range of terpenes found in the wild doesn’t taste or smell as good as the real thing. 7

Terpenes are to cannabis what tannins are to wine! Tannins are in every wine. They are phenol substances, astringent, and soluble. They are on the skin and in the seeds of the grape. One of the most renown tannins is resveratrol, good for your health. From heart diseases to stress due to cancer, you can find research studies about the benefits of resveratrol. 8

So the benefit of having Terpenes within the cannabinoid is to raise the healing property of the solution. This concludes my discussion of CBD. I hope you found these few weeks helpful and enlightening on a very complex topic.

Not all CBD’s are manufactured the same. Reports are out there that some companies don’t have any CBD in the product at all or even at the level of mg’s they are claiming. Here’s some of my thoughts on how to determine if CBD companies are reputable. Can they provide an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) this document is required by the FDA for your protection regarding the ingredients. Can they provide 3rd party testing to prove the product is what they say it is? Can you speak to a qualified professional when you call the company or is it just a website and links. These are good questions to give some guidelines for your research.
